In the actual TV Show Lost we see him in approx 50 days of being on the Island go from Drug Addict to a man willing to Die to protect Claire and the stranded cast of lost.

I hope they bring Charlie back even if it is as a Ghost or some strange time shift where Desmond can somehow save him.
